World Tunnel Congress 2019 in Naples Highlights Intersection of Tunneling, Archaeology, Architecture, and Art

The World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2019, held in Naples from May 3-9, drew more than 2,500 attendees from 60 nations, with 20% being under the age of 35. This event, organized by ITA-AITES and SIG, included sessions focused on 'triple A' themes, co-chaired by Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro. Italy ranks as the top European country and second worldwide in tunnel length, surpassing 2,100 km. Significant projects include the Brenner Base Tunnel (55 km, 2007–2027), Rome’s Metro Line C (set to finish in 2022), and the 180 km Naples-Bari high-speed rail line. Additionally, the Bourbon Tunnel (430 m, opened 2010) and Metro Lines 1 and 6 are part of a comprehensive system exceeding 100 km of track.
