World Press Photo 2019 Exhibition in Matera's Sassi Caves

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The World Press Photo 2019 exhibition, featuring award-winning photographs from the prestigious photojournalism competition, will be held in Matera's historic Sassi district from June 15 to July 14, 2019. The exhibition is organized by Photolux, the International Biennial of Photography of Lucca, and Circolo La Scaletta di Matera, in collaboration with 10b Photography and CIME. It will be hosted at the Ipogei Motta, ancient caves carved into calcarenite rock, once used as cellars with millstones and wine presses beneath Palazzo De Miccolis, now owned by the Motta family. The exhibition includes the World Press Photo of the Year 2019, "Crying girl on the border" by American photographer John Moore, depicting a Honduran child crying at the US-Mexico border. This marks the exhibition's first stop in southern Italy, following editions in Bari, Milan, and Rome, and coincides with Matera's tenure as European Capital of Culture 2019.
