World Press Photo 2016 winners exhibition opens in Rome
The World Press Photo 2016 exhibition opens at the Museo di Roma in Trastevere, Rome, running until May 29, 2016. The winning photo, 'Hope for a New Life' by Australian freelance photographer Warren Richardson (born 1968), depicts a baby being passed through barbed wire at the Serbia-Hungary border, where Richardson camped with refugees for five days. The image won Photo of the Year. The competition, based in Amsterdam, highlights the refugee crisis across multiple categories: Sergey Ponomarev (Russia) won first prize in General News Stories for documenting over a million refugees entering Europe for The New York Times; Magnus Wennman (Sweden) won third prize in People Stories for 'Where the Children Sleep,' portraying refugee children at night; Francesco Zizola (Italy) won second prize in Contemporary Issues Stories for his black-and-white images of migrants packed on boats between Libya and Italy for Médecins Sans Frontières. The exhibition also features images of pollution in Tianjin, China, endangered orangutans, and in vitro pregnancy. The catalog is published by 24 ORE Cultura.
