World Friendship Day Celebrated Through Art Masterpieces
On July 30, World Friendship Day is observed, proclaimed in 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly to foster friendship among peoples, countries, and cultures, promoting dialogue and mutual respect. The General Assembly recognizes friendship as a "noble and precious sentiment in the lives of human beings around the world." This sentiment, based on fidelity, trust, affection, respect, and esteem, has been a subject of philosophical study since antiquity, notably in Cicero's treatise De amicitia, and has also been depicted in numerous artworks, sometimes as a central theme or as a subtle reference. To celebrate the day, Artribune compiled a selection of paintings showing groups of friends sharing joyful moments, group portraits of colleagues, and delicate gestures such as holding hands in Matisse's Dance or the Three Graces in Botticelli's Spring. Works by Rubens, Courbet, and Renoir are also included. The article was written by Desirée Maida.
