Woonpioniers' CoHouse: Two Dutch Homes Interlock Like Tetris
Woonpioniers, a Dutch architectural firm, has finalized CoHouse, a 237-square-metre co-housing initiative located in Cothen, Utrecht. This project consists of two interconnected residences housed within a single gabled structure, resembling "a game of Tetris," in compliance with local regulations for a unified building volume. Leen Bogerd, a partner at the studio, explained that the homes were strategically rotated to maximize sunlight, privacy, and views. Each dwelling is tailored with sustainable features, including a timber framework, cross-laminated timber flooring, wood-fibre insulation, and a bio-based acoustic floor. Energy efficiency is bolstered by ground-source heat pumps, heat-recovery ventilation, and a solar roof. The interiors highlight exposed timber, grey flooring, and neutral shades, complemented by shared entryways and open-plan areas.
