Woody De Othello's 'Coming Forth By Day' at Pérez Art Museum Miami

Jennifer Inacio, the curator, highlights Woody De Othello's inaugural solo museum exhibition, 'Coming Forth By Day', which will be showcased at the Pérez Art Museum Miami from November 13, 2025, to June 28, 2026. This exhibition intertwines elements of Haitian cosmology, African spiritual practices, and diasporic narratives, transforming common items into symbols of memory and spirituality. Inacio focuses on evoking sensations, crafting an immersive experience enriched with color, scent, sound, and texture that resonates before it is comprehended. The title alludes to the Egyptian Book of the Dead, which De Othello views as a framework for purposeful living and transformation. A pyramid structure within the installation represents the journey of life from confinement to freedom. Both Inacio and De Othello are alumni of Florida Atlantic University, making their collaboration feel like a full-circle moment. The exhibition also includes pieces that honor Yoruba twin deities (Ibeji) and nkisi concepts, presented with reverence. Inacio aspires for audiences, especially those from African and Caribbean backgrounds, to experience recognition and perceive the ordinary in a new light.
