Woods Bagot completes modular satellite concourse at Los Angeles International Airport

architecture-design · 2026-04-17

At Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Woods Bagot has finalized the Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSC South), which adds 150,000 square feet and eight new gates to the Tom Bradley International Terminal. Utilizing off-site modular construction, nine prefabricated components were constructed 1.75 miles away and moved using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). The design incorporates steel frameworks, lightweight concrete slabs, seismic joints, and a powder-coated aluminum brise-soleil. Principal Matt Ducharme sought to achieve a "living room" ambiance to alleviate passenger anxiety. An underground tunnel connects the concourse. Collaboration included Los Angeles World Airports, WE O'Neil Construction, and Buro Happold, with photography by Jason O'Rear.
