Women Take Center Stage at 75th Venice Film Festival

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The 75th Venice Film Festival, held at the Lido, sparked controversy over gender representation. Only one film in the Official Selection was directed by a woman—Jennifer Kent's The Nightingale—but female performers and characters dominated the narrative. A scandal erupted when journalist Sharif Meghdoud shouted misogynistic insults at Kent's screening, leading to his accreditation being revoked by the Biennale. Despite the gender imbalance, Artistic Director Alberto Barbera programmed films with strong female leads, including Alfonso Cuarón's Roma starring Yalitza Aparicio, Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria, and Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite with three leading actresses. Hollywood stars Claire Foy (First Man), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), and Natalie Portman (Vox Lux) also featured. Italian cinema showcased female talent outside the competition: Wilma Labbate's Arrivederci Saigon, Una storia senza nome, Sulla mia pelle, I villeggianti, L'amica geniale, and Mario Martone's Capri Revolution with Marianna Fontana. The festival highlighted systemic issues in film production that limit women directors, while celebrating on-screen female power.
