Women in Abstraction: 110 Female Artists at Guggenheim Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents 'Women in Abstraction', a major group show featuring 110 female artists, on view until February 27, 2022. Co-curated by Christine Macel of the Centre Pompidou and Lekha Hileman Waitoller of the Guggenheim, the exhibition includes over 400 works spanning the 20th century. It aims to recover the visibility of women abstract artists, many of whom have been historically overlooked. The show opens with portraits of all 110 artists as a statement against the anonymity of female creators. Works range from painting and textile art to dance and video, challenging the traditional hierarchy of media. Highlights include pieces by Hilma af Klint, Georgiana Houghton, Loie Fuller, Gret Palucca, Gertrud Arndt, Hedda Sterne, Lee Krasner, Wook-kyung Choi, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Marta Pan, and Rosemarie Castoro. The exhibition is not Eurocentric, featuring artists from Korea, Lebanon, and Iran. It was developed by the Centre Pompidou after two years of research and is organized nearly chronologically, offering a revised history of abstraction through a female lens.
