Women Artists Gaining Ground in Auction Market and Museum Shows

Recent exhibitions and auction outcomes reveal a growing recognition of women artists, challenging the historical prevalence of male artists. Cady Noland stands out at 87th among the top 100 highest-selling artworks over the last five years. In the list of the top 100 best-performing artists, only six are women: Yayoi Kusama (6th), Cindy Sherman (31st), Julie Mehretu (81st), Marlene Dumas (96th), Bridget Riley (98th), and Tauba Auerbach (100th). At Sotheby’s October 2016 Evening Sale, Elizabeth Peyton was the sole female artist among 35 lots. Noteworthy changes include Lucy McKenzie’s work fetching 11 times its estimate and an increase in female curators and collectors. In Italy, Marina Apollonio's Dinamica Circolare 6K sold for £62,500, Giosetta Fioroni's La modella inglese for £56,250, and Carol Rama's Presagi di Birman for £179,000—record highs. Women artists frequently focus on materiality and sensuality, offering high-quality works at accessible prices.
