Wolfgang Tillmans' MoMA Survey Spans Three Decades of Protean Practice

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The Museum of Modern Art in New York has unveiled a long-anticipated exhibition of Wolfgang Tillmans, showcasing 417 pieces created over more than thirty years, ranging from photocopies of the mid-1980s to a 2023 music video. The display is loosely arranged in chronological order and features portraits, still lifes, nudes, abstractions, and nightlife scenes. True to his signature style, Tillmans uses unframed installations with binder clips or tape, arranging photographs at different heights. Included are works from his ongoing Truth Study Center series (initiated in 2005) and the Freischwimmer series (begun in the early 2000s). A dedicated AIDS activist and LGBTQ+ rights supporter, Tillmans was diagnosed with HIV in 1997. The exhibition is open until January 1.
