Wolfgang Tillmans launches anti-Brexit poster campaign to boost youth voter turnout

artist · 2026-05-05

Turner Prize-winning photographer Wolfgang Tillmans has created a series of posters urging young Britons to register to vote ahead of the June 23 referendum on EU membership. In an open letter, Tillmans expressed horror at the right-wing, anti-European drift across Europe and called for maximizing turnout among younger voters, with a registration deadline of June 7. The campaign, featuring slogans like "We are a European family" and "What is lost is lost forever," aims to counter Brexit, which Tillmans argues could spell the end of the EU—an imperfect but democratic institution. Separately, at his Berlin space Between Bridges, Tillmans launched the Meeting Place project in April, focusing on refugees and immigration through exhibitions and talks, creating an intercultural bridge. He noted that many in the art community asked how they could help amid the ongoing refugee crisis, and his response was this forum, demonstrating art's role in political and social action.
