Wolfgang Tillmans directs music video for Powell's 'Freezer'

Wolfgang Tillmans has directed the music video for 'Freezer', the latest single by electronic musician Powell. The video features a sequence of a pot of water boiling in sync with the music, intercut with photographs by Tillmans. This collaboration follows Tillmans' 2017 EP 'Make It Up As You Go Along' and his earlier music video for Pet Shop Boys' 'Home and Dry' in 2002. The video premiered at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, where Tillmans is currently the subject of a major exhibition focusing on his work from the 2000s. The exhibition highlights Tillmans' deep connection to London, where he moved in the late 1980s and became known for his fashion photography, depictions of London nightlife, and the queer erotic universe. His work has been compared to Nan Goldin's images of New York nights. The Tate show does not ignore Tillmans' relationship with music, having hosted the world premiere of Powell's album and the Tillmans-directed video. Powell, for his part, promoted his album by plastering London with posters containing his email, asking people to interview him or exchange music—a marketing campaign executed as an artistic performance.
