publication · 2026-04-27

Filmmaker Sareesh Sudhakaran of online cinematography school Wolfcrow released a video detailing the function of color as a powerful system to focus viewers on the story and understand protagonists despite visual noise. Using examples from recent hit films like Her, Amélie, Drive, and Joker, Sudhakaran explains that getting the right colors is the job of the production designer, costume designer, and director of photography, while a colorist can perform miracles within reasonable limits. He notes that in most great films, the director has used color as an additional storytelling tool.
