Wispr Flow bets on India's voice AI market despite linguistic hurdles

Wispr Flow, a Bay Area startup specializing in AI-driven voice input software, has pinpointed India as its second-largest market after the U.S., experiencing rapid growth in both user base and revenue. Earlier this year, the company initiated beta testing of a Hinglish voice model, subsequently launching on Android after its debut on Mac, Windows, and iOS. Co-founder and CEO Tanay Kothari informed TechCrunch that following the Hinglish introduction and a marketing initiative in India, growth surged to approximately 100% month-over-month. Wispr Flow has set India-specific pricing at ₹320 ($3.4) per month for annual subscriptions, with intentions to reduce it to ₹10–20 (10–20 cents). The firm has recruited Nimisha Mehta to oversee operations in India and aspires to expand its local workforce to 30. Sensor Tower reports that from October 2025 to April 2026, Wispr Flow was downloaded over 2.5 million times globally, with India representing 14% of installations but only 2% of in-app purchase revenue. Kothari noted a global and Indian retention rate of 70% after 12 months. The startup employs two full-time linguistics PhDs and plans to broaden its multilingual capabilities to include additional Indian languages. Competitors encompass ElevenLabs, Gnani.ai, Smallest AI, and Bolna. Neil Shah from Counterpoint Research described India as "the ultimate stress test for voice AI," highlighting challenges related to language, accent, and context.
