Winy Maas on MVRDV's Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Archive and the Barbapapa House Dream

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

In a November morning interview in Rotterdam, Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV, discussed the firm's innovative projects, focusing on the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen archive extension. The 14,300 sqm mirrored structure, resembling Anish Kapoor's Chicago Bean, will feature 2,000 sqm for collectors to exhibit or store art. Set in a park adjacent to the museum, it will have trees replanted on its roof, offering views to a children's hospital. Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist will design colorful ground paths. Completion is set for 2019, with public opening in 2020, consolidating seven archive locations across the Netherlands and Belgium. Maas also mentioned MVRDV's completed Tianjin Binhai Library in China, a residential tower in Amsterdam, a New York project, the Dutch pavilion for Expo 2022 in Łódź, Poland, and the Markthal (2014). He expressed admiration for Rem Koolhaas, called a 'dear friend' and competitor, and lamented failed attempts to build in Italy despite a strong affinity with Milan. His dream project: a fluid, hyper-technological 'Barbapapa house' using software and nanotechnology.
