Winy Maas Appointed Guest Editor of Domus for 2019

publication · 2026-05-04

Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV, has been named the new guest editor of Domus magazine for 2019, succeeding Michele De Lucchi. The appointment continues the 10x10x10 format, where ten issues are curated by ten international architects over ten years, marking the magazine's centenary. Maas will oversee ten issues focusing on a single theme: the city of the future. He aims to explore how cities can be more responsible, open, curious, green, and human. The editorial manifesto, published in the December issue, positions Domus as an "agenda for change" addressing climate change. Maas envisions the magazine as a platform for discussing better materials, buildings, and urban planning. Walter Mariotti, editorial director of Domus, described the year as a single volume of over a thousand pages across ten issues, maintaining multidisciplinary connections with politics, economics, and sociology. Maas, born in 1959 in the Netherlands, is the fourth foreign director of Domus after François Burkhardt, Deyan Sudjic, and Joseph Grima. His firm MVRDV, founded in 1993 with Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries, is known for projects like the Market Hall in Rotterdam, Seoullo7017 in Seoul, and the Tianjin Binhai Library in China. Maas is a visiting professor at Columbia GSAPP and IIT Chicago, and directs the Why Factory research institute at TU Delft. Upcoming MVRDV projects include the Dutch pavilion for Expo 2022 in Łódź, Poland, and the Boijmans Museum archive expansion in Rotterdam.
