Winter 2002 Gallery Walk in Paris's 13th Arrondissement

In winter 2002, a stroll through the galleries of rue Louise-Weiss in Paris's 13th arrondissement offers a disorienting experience. The area around the Bibliothèque de France remains strangely unreal five years on. Jennifer Flay at Sans dessus-dessous inverts her stock, turning offices into performance spaces (including Tsuneko Taniuchi's tender marriage proposals) and using computers to exhibit Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster's website. Jean-Luc Blanc at Art: Concept decontextualizes film and magazine images into enigmatic paintings, moving into a new painterly phase. Serge Comte presents portraits made of colored beads. At Emmanuel Perrotin, Spanish photographer Javier Vallhonrat shows nocturnal mountain landscapes blending real, model, and computer reconstructions. Miwa Yanagi at Almine Rech presents "My Grandmothers," where young girls imagine themselves in 50 years, with computer-altered photographs. Joseph Grigely at Air de Paris installs a sound piece featuring voices learning to pronounce Ed Ruscha's name.
