Winfred Gaul retrospective opens at CRAC Puglia in Taranto
The CRAC Puglia (Centro di ricerca Arte contemporanea) in Taranto presents the first national retrospective dedicated to Winfred Gaul (1928–2003), a key figure in analytical painting, on the twentieth anniversary of his death. Curated by Alberto Zanchetta and organized in collaboration with Galleria Roberto Peccolo of Livorno, the exhibition is the first of a trilogy exploring different phases of Gaul's work. Subsequent stops will be at CaMusAC in Cassino and GAM di Nervi in Genoa. Gaul had a strong connection with Italy: in 1957 he exhibited for the first time in Milan at Galleria Apollinaire of Guido Lenoci, and collaborated with major galleries of the time, including La Salita, La Tartaruga, and L'Attico of Fabio Sargentini. The show focuses on the Recycling series (1981–1997), a pivotal moment in his career marked by experimentation with abstract, concrete, and informal art. Gaul's "Pittura pittura" is characterized by vivid colors, immediacy of gesture, and the use of poor materials like Italian wine packaging cardboard, breaking with modernist conventions.
