William Shum captures Hong Kong's iconic red taxi against dense architecture

William Shum won the 2025 Mobile Photography awards with his photo 'Taxi in Hong Kong, 2022', shot on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. The image shows a red taxi passing in front of a residential building in Yau Ma Tei, a district he describes as authentic and full of local life. Shum waited half an hour on the far side of the road to capture the taxi centrally in the frame, using burst mode to get the exact position. The contrast between the building's dense, layered windows and air-conditioning units and the taxi's clean, simple shape creates a winning composition. Shum had breakfast in the area before his street photography session.
