market-auction · 2026-04-26

William Kentridge, the South African artist born in Johannesburg in 1955, has joined Hauser & Wirth, the mega-gallery with a global footprint. The representation is a collaboration with his long-time gallery Goodman Gallery (present in Johannesburg, London, and New York) and Galleria Lia Rumma. Kentridge had been with Goodman Gallery for over thirty years. His first solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth is scheduled for 2025 at its New York location. Before that, on July 7, 2024, his new opera production "The Great Yes, the Great No" will premiere at the LUMA Foundation in Arles, in collaboration with the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. Kentridge has been involved in opera since 2005 when he directed Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He also founded the Center for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg in 2016, a space for interdisciplinary artistic experimentation. Iwan Wirth, president of Hauser & Wirth, stated that it is "a true honor" that Kentridge has joined the gallery, praising his creative brilliance and collaborative spirit. Kentridge's practice spans drawings, visual and sound installations, film, theater, and performance, often rooted in historical documents and autobiographical references, addressing injustices and absurdities of the contemporary era.
