William Eggleston's Final Dye-Transfer Prints Exhibited at David Zwirner
An exhibition titled 'William Eggleston: The Last Dyes' is currently on display at David Zwirner in New York, featuring the final dye-transfer prints created from the photographer's negatives. The show marks fifty years since Eggleston's first exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1976. It includes previously unseen works from the early 1970s, when Eggleston adopted the dye-transfer printing technique, which produces vivid, intense colors. The exhibition comprises about fifty prints in small editions, selected from his early period, including images of the American South. Eggleston, now eighty-six, began photographing in color in the late 1960s, capturing scenes around Memphis and Mississippi. The dye-transfer process, which involves hand-printing with cyan, magenta, and yellow dyes, became synonymous with his work after Eastman Kodak discontinued materials in 1994. Eggleston and his sons stockpiled remaining supplies, and printers Guy Stricherz and Irene Malli of CVI Labs produced these final prints exclusively for him. The show highlights Eggleston's focus on color as essential to photography, with critics noting its emotional saturation and influence from filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock. It runs through March 7, 2026.
