Will Ryman's Urban Garden Installation at Marlborough Chelsea Features Oversized Roses and Urban Detritus

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From September 10 to October 10, 2009, Marlborough Chelsea hosted Will Ryman's exhibition, which showcased more than 100 meticulously crafted roses in striking shades of pink and red, standing between two and seven feet tall. The display also featured oversized insects, including a black fly, aphids, ladybugs, and enormous bees, as well as urban debris like crumpled Coke cans and cigarette butts. Ryman employed industrial materials such as wire mesh and plaster, complemented by a textured steel floor that produced clanking sounds, echoing the raw essence of New York City. Titled 'A New Beginning,' the exhibition hinted at a fresh direction for Ryman and a possible revival for the city, with the roses displaying architectural traits in their rugged design.
