Wilhelm Leibl: Realist Painter's Life and Legacy in Paris and Bavaria
Wilhelm Leibl, a German realist artist born in Cologne in 1844, passed away in 1900. He trained at the Munich Academy under the guidance of Arthur Freiherr von Ramberg and Karl Theodor von Piloty. Initially, he created works like 'Estudio de concierto,' but later he shifted to a more sophisticated color palette inspired by 17th-century artists. In 1869, he showcased his work at the First International Art Exhibition in Munich and was invited to Paris by Gustave Courbet that November. Although he earned a gold medal at the Salon, he returned to Bavaria due to the Franco-Prussian War in the summer of 1870. The Leibl Circle was established in 1871, and after facing a creative block, he found success in exhibitions by 1889. His later works foreshadowed both Expressionism and Cubism.
