Wikipedia's Most Prolific Editor and the AI Threat

Steven Pruitt, a 42-year-old records-management contractor from Alexandria, Virginia, has made over six million edits to English Wikipedia under the username Ser Amantio di Nicolao, creating more than 30,000 articles. He is widely considered the most prolific Wikipedian globally, though he avoids editing living persons' biographies and focuses on "fairly obscure dead people." Pruitt began editing in 2004-2005, starting with niche Revolutionary War topics. His work has shifted from article creation to maintenance, using the semi-automated tool AutoWikiBrowser to correct dates, fix links, and standardize categories. Wikipedia's co-founder Jimmy Wales noted Pruitt's edits are "incredibly important" but do not represent undue influence. Other super editors like Justin Knapp and Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight (founder of Women in Red) emphasize collaboration over competition. In October 2025, Elon Musk's xAI launched Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia that repurposes Wikipedia content. Pruitt found its entries "less right" than he would make them, with subtle distortions. Wikipedia has banned using large language models for contributions, citing lack of accountability. AI companies including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity have joined the Wikimedia Foundation's commercial service for large-scale data access. Wales insists on "human in the loop" for AI use. Wikipedia remains dependent on volunteers like Pruitt, who says he could stop editing "if I wanted to."
