Wiener Festwochen 2026 Opens with Milo Rau's 'Republic of the Arts'

The Wiener Festwochen 2026, which has been artistically directed by Milo Rau since 2024, commenced on May 15, 2026, in Vienna, Austria, and will continue until June 21, 2026. Recognized as one of Europe’s most significant multidisciplinary contemporary performance festivals, it features a lineup of international talents such as Romeo Castellucci, Angélica Liddell, Robert Wilson, and Patti Smith. The theme, "La République des arts," emphasizes democracy, a concept that emerged from Rau's radical overhaul initiated in 2024 with the establishment of the Free Republic of Vienna, witnessed by 40,000 attendees. The festival is distinguished as the first globally to adopt a constitution, the Vienna Declaration, outlining democratic programming and ethical standards, crafted by the Council of the Republic, which includes eighty local and international members. New initiatives encompass a hymn, flag, the Vienna Trials, the Academy of Second Modernism, and a permanent venue, the House of the Republic. Over five weeks, the festival showcases theater, music, opera, and performances that creatively engage with sociopolitical themes.
