WHW Curatorial Collective Discusses 11th Istanbul Biennial in Afterall Talk

exhibition · 2026-04-22

On 25 February 2015, the eighth Exhibition Histories Talk was held at Whitechapel Gallery in London, featuring Ivet Ćurlin from the Zagreb-based curatorial group WHW/What, How & for Whom. During the event, which ran from 19:00 to 20:30, Ćurlin elaborated on WHW's curatorial endeavor for the 11th Istanbul Biennial, titled 'What Keeps Mankind Alive?' (2009). This project sought to reconceptualize the biennial as a meta-device to promote critical thought, distancing it from its immediate artistic and political surroundings. The discussion was facilitated by Afterall’s Line Ellegaard. Tickets were priced at £8.50 (£6.50 for concessions). This talk is part of the Exhibition Histories research initiative by Afterall, in collaboration with the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, and is distributed by Koenig Books, London. A video of the talk is accessible online.
