Whitworth reinstates Forensic Architecture's Palestine statement alongside pro-Israel response

exhibition · 2026-04-20

After receiving complaints from pro-Israel groups, the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester restored Forensic Architecture's statement expressing solidarity with Palestine. The collective had warned that they would withdraw their exhibition if the statement was not reinstated. In response, gallery director Alastair Hudson proposed a solution: both the original statement and a counter-text from the Manchester Jewish Representative Council would be showcased. This exhibition focuses on chemical attacks and pollution in regions such as Syria, Chile, Papua, and Palestine, connecting the fight for Palestinian liberation to worldwide struggles. The Jewish Representative Council's text defends Israel as a democracy and challenges the occupation narrative. Concerns about community relations were voiced by Jonathan Turner of UK Lawyers for Israel.
