Whitstable Biennale 2016 Explores Migration and Belonging Through Coastal Installations

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Running until June 12, 2016, the eighth Whitstable Biennale, named 'The Faraway Nearby,' delves into themes of travel, distance, and migration. Various local venues host a range of artistic displays. Notably, Webb-Ellis's 'Parlor Walls' (2016) makes its debut, reflecting on connections through eel migration and drawing dystopian parallels to Ray Bradbury's 'Fahrenheit 451.' Collaborating with Sundae Sundae, Marcia Farquhar introduces a sarsaparilla flavor while her film is showcased in the shop window. Richard Layzell's 'Softly Softly' (2015) features guerrilla gardening and teddy bear catapulting. Becca Voelcker's film 'Island' (2015) portrays life on Ishigaki island, and Sarah Wood's 'Boat People' (2016) examines migration, highlighting Kent County Council's reception of over 1,500 unaccompanied child refugees.
