Whitney Museum's 'Dreamlands' and Bronx Latin American Art Biennial Highlight New York's Fall Season
The Whitney Museum of American Art has opened 'Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905–2016,' a major exhibition occupying the entire fifth floor. Curated by Chrissie Iles, the show explores the intersection of cinema and art, featuring works from the 1920s to the digital age. Highlights include Dora Budor's 'Adaptation of an Instrument' with glowing frogs, Oskar Schlemmer's 'Das Triadische Ballet,' Walt Disney's preparatory drawings for 'Fantasia,' Bruce Conner's 'Crossroads' showing atomic bomb tests, Jud Yalkut's film-covered floor installation, and Hito Steyerl's 'Factory of the Sun,' previously at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition includes young artists like Terence Broad (b. 1992) and Ivana Basic (b. 1986). A parallel program at Microscope Gallery in Bushwick complements the show. Meanwhile, the fifth edition of the Bronx Latin American Art Biennial runs until December 20, curated by Alexis Mendoza and Luis Stephenberg under the theme 'I am one of those people that…,' addressing immigration, equality, and feminism. The biennial takes place at multiple venues including the Bronx Museum and Bronx Art Space. Additionally, Zoe Leonard's 1992 text 'I want a Black woman for president' has been installed under the Strand Hotel by High Line Art director Cecilia Alemani. Italian artist Angelica Bergamini has a solo show at Ivy Brown in the Meatpacking District, featuring collages, video installations, paintings, photography, and drawings exploring femininity.
