Whitney Museum Receives Edward Hopper's Personal Archive

institutional · 2026-05-05

The Whitney Museum of American Art has received a major donation of archival materials related to Edward Hopper (1882–1967) from the Arthayer R. Sanborn Hopper Collection Trust. The archive includes over 4,000 items such as personal letters, photographs, drawings, notebooks, diaries, and even receipts from gallerists. The collection sheds light on Hopper's daily life, friendships, collaborations, and artistic reflections, as well as the role of his wife Josephine Nivison, who modeled for many female figures in his paintings. This acquisition solidifies the Whitney, designed by Renzo Piano, as the institution holding the largest number of Hopper's works. Separately, a collection of over 1,000 memorabilia from the same trust has been donated to the Hopper House museum in Nyack, New York, Hopper's birthplace. That collection includes books, original letters, and school drawings from Hopper's formative years, and will be publicly displayed for the first time this autumn during the 50th anniversary of Hopper's death.
