Whitney Museum director Adam Weinberg to step down after 20 years
Adam Weinberg, who has directed the Whitney Museum since 2003, will step down on October 31. He will be succeeded by Scott Rothkopf, currently the museum's chief deputy director and chief curator. Weinberg's tenure included the museum's 2015 move to a Renzo Piano-designed building in the Meatpacking District, which broadened its audience. The 2017 Whitney Biennial, the first at the new location, sparked controversy over Dana Schutz's painting of Emmett Till. Rothkopf joined the Whitney in 2009 as curator, later becoming associate director of programmes and chief curator, and senior deputy director in 2018. He curated major exhibitions including the 2014 Jeff Koons retrospective, Laura Owens's 2017 solo show, and the 2021–2022 Jasper Johns retrospective. Rothkopf expressed gratitude and confidence in the museum's future.
