Whitney Museum appoints David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards as 2021 Biennial curators

exhibition · 2026-04-20

David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards will co-organize the 2021 Whitney Biennial, both serving as curators at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Edwards joined the institution in 2018 as curator of performance, while Breslin recently became director of curatorial initiatives. Museum director Adam D. Weinberg stated in a press release that the pair would bring fresh perspectives to the historic exhibition and reinvent it for complex times. Recent editions of the biennial have faced controversy, including calls in 2017 for the removal of a Dana Schutz painting accused of sensationalizing violence against Black people. Several artists withdrew from this year's biennial over the presence of Safariland CEO Warren B. Kanders on the museum's board, though he has since resigned.
