Whitney Biennial 2010: A Two-Part Survey of American Art

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From February 25 to May 30, 2010, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York showcased its Biennial, curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari and Francesco Bonami. The fifth floor displayed a historical overview featuring works from previous biennials and annuals dating back to 1932, including notable pieces by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and Jeff Koons. The contemporary section highlighted around fifty artists, with more than half being women, focusing on the theme of 'America-ness.' The curators chose not to give the biennial a specific title, simply referring to it as '2010.' Critic Paul Ardenne remarked on the exhibition's lack of coherence and ambition, indicating a decline in US cultural leadership.
