Whitechapel Gallery lays off six staff including senior curators amid financial deficit
London's Whitechapel Gallery has eliminated six full-time positions in a restructuring that includes three curatorial roles. Among those affected are former chief curator Lydia Yee and Candy Stobbs, who served on the curatorial team for over two decades. Two development department members and a senior commercial team role were also made redundant. Director Gilane Tawadros, who assumed leadership in May 2022, will now oversee the curatorial team with support from two remaining curators. Financial reports reveal the gallery operated at a deficit during the 2021-22 fiscal year, with £4.5 million in income against £4.7 million in expenditures, resulting in a £73,016 shortfall after investment gains. A spokesperson cited rising energy costs, inflation, and decreased consumer activity as contributing factors. Arts Council England funding has been reduced from £1,510,168 annually (2018-22) to £1,437,955 (2023-26). Former director Iwona Blazwick expressed concern about the loss of experienced staff and potential program cuts, hoping the gallery maintains its artistic commitment.
