White Rabbit Gallery's 'I Loved You' exhibition explores love's complexities through contemporary Chinese art

White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney presents 'I Loved You,' a group exhibition featuring 47 works from its collection of over 2,500 contemporary Chinese artworks, on view through November 21. The show examines various forms of love, challenging conventional romantic ideals through diverse media. Shi Yong's 2009 neon installation 'A Bunch of Happy Fantasies' displays upside-down Chinese characters spelling a drug-inspired poem, questioning sentimental projections. Hu Weiyi's '14 Minutes' (2013) documents intimate imprints on a lover's skin, while Pixy Liao's 'Experimental Relationship' series (2007–) photographs with partner Moro subvert gender norms. Shao Yinong and Muchen's 'Fairy Tales in Red Times' (2003–07) hand-colored photographs elevate special-needs children using propaganda aesthetics. Zhou Zixi's 'Classmates – Four Policemen' (2017) paintings depict former classmates vulnerably without uniforms. Late photographer Ren Hang presents intimate scenes like submerged figures with goldfish. Jin Shi's 'Small Business – Karaoke' (2009) recreates a rickshaw karaoke bar celebrating overlooked workers. Gao Rong's 'The Static Eternity' (2012) embroidered replica memorializes her demolished grandparents' Inner Mongolia home. The exhibition references Ancient Greek concepts like eros, storge, philia, and agape while exploring love as labor, fantasy, and social critique.
