Formed in New York in the late 1990s after Dave W. moved from San Francisco, the band has released numerous albums, evolving their space-rock sound. Their music incorporates influences from visual artists like Raymond Pettibon, Mark Leckey, and Bruce Conner, as well as filmmakers such as Wes Anderson and John Waters. Dave W. also creates paintings inspired by phosphenes—light patterns seen when eyes are closed—which he explores through meditation. The duo rejects genre labels, describing their work as a multifaceted artistic sum. 'Stop Mute Defeat' addresses themes of materialism, technology, and personal responsibility, urging listeners to create change rather than succumb to apathy.
