White Cube to Open New Seoul Gallery in Gangnam District

White Cube will open a new gallery in Seoul's Gangnam-gu district this autumn, joining a wave of international galleries expanding into South Korea's art market. The 300+ sqm space will include exhibition areas, a private viewing room, and offices, led by Jini Yang, who has been White Cube's agent in Korea since 2018. The gallery is located near Dosan Park in the same building as Horim Art Centre, which houses a collection of ancient and modern Korean art. Founder Jay Jopling cited the success of the first Frieze Seoul as evidence of the region's growing importance, noting an engaged collector community. White Cube also plans to open a new gallery on New York's Upper East Side this autumn, adding to existing spaces in London, Paris, and Hong Kong. Founded in London in 1993 by Jay Jopling, White Cube represents over 60 international artists and estates, including Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Bruce Nauman, and Korean artist Park Seo Bo. Other Western galleries that have recently opened in Seoul include Pace Gallery, Lehmann Maupin, Thaddaeus Ropac (which is doubling its Hannam-dong space for Frieze 2023), Perrotin, Gladstone Gallery, Peres Projects (which opened a second space), and Esther Schipper (which opened last year and plans a summer exhibition of Korean artists between Seoul and Berlin).
