When Cute Turns Dangerous: 8 Artists Subverting Childhood Imagery

Catapult Contemporary, located in Vienna, showcased the works of eight artists: Olga Krykun, Dominika Kováčiková, Daniel Ferstl, Grip Face (David Oliver), Ophelia Arc, Martin Schuster, Gabriela Genčúrová, and Luca Bjørnsten. These creators utilize themes of cuteness and playfulness to delve into topics such as trauma, war, consumerism, and identity. Krykun's upcoming exhibition in 2026, titled 'Stardust for Tomorrow,' will employ kawaii visuals to comment on war in Prague. Kováčiková's art merges candy hues with knives to reflect on girlhood and violence. Ferstl's work features soft textile horror sculptures, while Grip Face's 'Utopía del Lodo y Sashimi de Bruma' at the Miró Foundation Museum politicizes playgrounds. Arc illustrates trauma through crochet, Schuster critiques existence with toy-like structures, Genčúrová's surreal paintings provoke unease, and Bjørnsten addresses consumer culture with retro video-game designs.
