Western Burgos launches digital program to restore medieval churches and boost rural tourism

The western region of Burgos has initiated a digitalization and dissemination program for 14 medieval churches to attract respectful tourism and generate economic resources for their restoration. The project aims to combat depopulation by leveraging cultural heritage as an economic driver. Archaeologist Ángel Palomino emphasizes that rural areas cannot afford to waste resources, and that this initiative represents a last opportunity for villages suffering from urban exodus since the 1950s. The program includes business plans, economic analysis, and market estimates to ensure the churches become self-sustaining through tourism revenue.
