West End Shows Face Potential Strike After Equity Vote

other · 2026-05-22

London's West End could see major productions temporarily close after Equity members voted overwhelmingly in favor of potential strike action over pay and conditions. An indicative ballot saw 98% support, allowing the union to proceed with a statutory ballot. The dispute involves 1,000 members across 44 shows, including hits by producers Cameron Mackintosh and Sonia Friedman. Equity proposes a 7% annual pay increase for three years, better holiday pay, and incapacity pay for injuries. Negotiations with the Society of London Theatre (Solt) have stalled since December 2025. Despite record audiences—37 million attendees nationwide, 17 million in the West End—production costs have doubled in a decade. Equity general secretary Paul W Fleming warned that weekend matinees and evening shows could be targeted. The next meeting is set for June 10; if no agreement is reached, a strike ballot will follow. Solt stated that constructive discussions are ongoing and progress has been made.
