West Bund Art & Design launches second edition of ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng exhibition program

West Bund Art & Design has announced the return of its special exhibition program, ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng, for its second edition. The program will run from 10–12 November 2017 in Shanghai. Curated by the contemporary art magazine ArtReview Asia, the initiative invites artists to create solo projects exploring how context generates meaning. The curatorial concept stems from the Chinese characters for 'xiàn' and 'Chǎng', which together refer to being on the spot or at a specific site. Works will be displayed both inside the fair and at various locations across Shanghai's West Bund district. A complete list of participating artists will be revealed in July 2017. The program debuted successfully in 2016, featuring 25 works by artists including Merlin James, Shanzhai Biennial, Philippe Parreno, Haroon Mirza, Sean Scully, Hao Jingfang, Wang Lingjie, and Qiu Anxiong. That edition also included a large-scale textwork by Liam Gillick commissioned for a fair site facade. For the 2017 edition, West Bund Art & Design will present a special prize for the best work in the program. Invited judges will select the winner, with both the jury list and final recipient announced in November 2017. The program examines how the contemporary aspect of art relates to space and place as much as to time. Artists are encouraged to engage with all four dimensions of space-time in their work, playing with context to produce both intended and unexpected meanings.
