Wesley Duke Lee's Multifaceted Career Showcased at Miami Art Basel

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

A dedicated booth at Miami Art Basel presents nine works by Brazilian artist Wesley Duke Lee, spanning his career from 1962 to 1999. Organized by gallerist Ricardo Camargo and the artist's niece Patrícia Lee, with participation from São Paulo gallery Almeida & Dale, the exhibition occupies a 36-square-meter stand in sector S3. Key pieces include the 1962 'Capacete do mestre Khyrurgos,' marking his early mythological experimentation and collage work, and 'Zona: I Ching' (1964), shown at Tokyo Gallery in 1965 and New York's Guggenheim in 1966. The 1969 work 'A Zona: Arino Boa Viagem' reflects his LSD experimentation, while 'O/Limpo: Anima' (1971) was an evolving environmental installation. The display also features studio furniture, his main easel, and a mask from his 1969 Japan Biennial award. This presentation follows the 2015 establishment of the Wesley Duke Lee Art Institute in São Paulo by Camargo and Lee, which houses a database of 6,000 documents and aims to produce a catalogue raisonné. The artist, who died in 2010, was a pioneer of Pop language in Brazil and worked across painting, xerox, collage, sculpture, and computer graphics after studying at Parsons School of Design in 1952.
