Werner Bischof Centenary Exhibition at Casa dei Tre Oci, Venice

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A major exhibition of Werner Bischof's photography opens at Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice, curated by his son Marco Bischof to mark the centenary of the photographer's birth. The show features 250 photographs spanning Bischof's career, from early still lifes in Switzerland to war-torn Europe, Asia reportage, and North and South America. A section of twenty unpublished photographs taken in Italy is also included. Bischof, who studied at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts after the painting course was full, worked for Vogue and Life and was a member of Magnum alongside Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson. He considered himself an artist rather than a photojournalist, and his critical stance toward the press is highlighted in the exhibition. The show is presented by Casa dei Tre Oci, with contributions from Civita Tre Venezie and Magnum Photos. Denis Curti, artistic director of Casa dei Tre Oci, and Andrea Holzerr of Magnum spoke at the press conference. Bischof died in 1954 in Trujillo, Peru.
