Werk Estudio's Casa Violetas Wraps Around a Semi-Enclosed Courtyard in Madrid
Werk Estudio has completed Casa Violetas, a detached single-family house in Madrid, Spain, organized around a semi-enclosed central courtyard. The design unfolds as a single linear gesture that folds gradually without fully closing, creating alternating open and intimate spaces. Thick white exterior walls with limited openings present a solid, private facade, while the inner courtyard facade is lighter and more permeable, allowing natural light, vegetation, and cross ventilation into all rooms. The living area directly connects the courtyard to the garden, linking a protected outdoor space with a larger social zone. Bioclimatic principles are integrated: passive strategies from the Passivhaus standard combine with aerothermal energy, underfloor heating and cooling, and photovoltaic panels to optimize thermal comfort and reduce energy demand. The project was led by architects Mayte Rodríguez Junker and Adolfo Navarro Cano. Images and a video were released by the studio.
