Wendy Red Star's First Monograph 'Delegation' Published by Aperture and Documentary Arts

The first comprehensive monograph of Apsáalooke/Crow artist Wendy Red Star, titled 'Delegation,' was published on June 14, 2022. Copublished by Aperture and Documentary Arts, this 272-page hardback features 280 images spanning Red Star's lens-based works from 2006 to the present. Red Star, born in Billings, Montana in 1981 and based in Portland, Oregon, employs photography to recast historical narratives through a feminist, Indigenous perspective. Her practice includes imaginative self-portraiture, vivid collages, archival interventions, and site-specific installations that center Native American life and material culture. The publication includes essays, stories, and poems by contributors including art historian Jordan Amirkhani, professor Julia Bryan-Wilson, artist and art historian Josh T. Franco, curator Annika K. Johnson, poet Layli Long Soldier, and writer Tiffany Midge. Red Star's work questions the photographer's role in shaping Indigenous representation, referencing sources ranging from nineteenth-century Crow leaders to 1980s pulp fiction, museum collections, and family pictures. Her photographs are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Brooklyn Museum in New York; the Saint Louis Art Museum; and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe. Red Star previously guest edited Aperture magazine's Fall 2020 issue 'Native America.' The book measures 8 x 10.25 x 1.13 inches and carries ISBN 9781683952497.
