architecture-design · 2026-05-21

The Wende Museum, dedicated to Cold War history and located in Culver City, Los Angeles, has revealed its intention to establish an extension known as the Wende’s Institute for Archival Research in Hawthorne. This new institute will occupy the Hahn Building, a 1965 edifice crafted by renowned theater architect George Nowak. The adaptive reuse initiative is being spearheaded by Welcome Projects, led by Laurel Consuelo Broughton, alongside BoydDesign. Spanning 24,000 square feet, the extension will house the museum's extensive collection of over 250,000 artifacts, artworks, and archival materials. Renovations aim to restore the building's original midcentury modern aesthetic, eliminating later modifications. Completion of the project is anticipated by 2028.
