award · 2026-05-05

The Wellcome Image Awards is celebrating its 20th year, recognizing exceptional visuals in science and research. In 2017, a panel of medical science and communication experts selected 22 images, highlighting ten remarkable pieces. Among them is a 3D image of a piglet's eye by Peter M Maloca and collaborators from the University of Basel and Moorfields Eye Hospital. Gabriel Luna presented a composite of over 400 mouse retina images, while Ezequiel Miron showcased DNA cell division. Susan Smart captured an eye clinic in India during a Unite For Sight mission. Also, MIT team members João Conde, Nuria Oliva, and Natalie Artzi achieved a 90% tumor reduction in mice using microRNA therapy.
