Weekend itinerary through Spoleto's art, history, and culture

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Spoleto has been selected as one of the three Umbrian cities—alongside Assisi and Orvieto—contending for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2025, with the announcement of the winner set for March 21. The theme of its proposal, 'Culture Generates Energy,' highlights the city's extensive historical heritage. Notable attractions comprise the Ponte delle Torri from the 13th century, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, consecrated in 1216, various Romanesque churches, and Palazzo Collicola, which houses the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Giovanni Carandente. A solo exhibition by Klaus Münch is ongoing until February 12. The former prison, Rocca Albornoziana, now features the Museo Nazionale del Ducato, while the Museo Archeologico Nazionale showcases artifacts spanning from the Bronze Age to Roman times. Dining venues include Il Capanno, Il Tempio del gusto, and Prosciutteria del Corso.
