Wayamou: Lenguas de lo común at Museo Tamayo

exhibition · 2026-05-10

At Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, the exhibition 'Wayamou: Lenguas de lo común' showcases a three-decade-long collaboration between Laura Anderson Barbata (born in Mexico, 1958) and Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe (born in Venezuela, 1971). Their partnership commenced in the early 1990s when Anderson Barbata acquired canoe-building skills from the Ye'kuana community and initiated a handmade paper workshop. In 1992, they established Yanomami Owë Mamotima to help the community convey its narratives. The term 'wayamou' refers to a Yanomami method for resolving disputes. Hakihiiwe's illustrations capture ecological insights, while Anderson Barbata's work delves into 'transcommunality.' The exhibition, curated by Andrea Torreblanca and Abril Zales, is open until May 10, 2026.
